Portals to Another World(s)
Portals to Another World(s) was funded by a Redlands University - Los Angeles Faculty Development Grant.
In collaboration with artists Sean Landers and B Hinners, we developed a curriculum for a class or extended workshop that invites participants to create imaginary worlds, and then develop interactive or immersive experiences which transport visitors to them. The goal is to foster a creative space in which participants’ imagination encounter the reality of the world, encouraging them through this intense - and rewarding! - type of creative process.
The pilot took place during Spring 2026, in Los Angeles, with an exhibition on MADE @Woodbury, in May. A group of student participants created different fictional worlds that could be accessed by interactive and immersive installations.
A visitor was invited the explore a circus tent with a tiny spectacle, and they were given a colorful potion to drink. After walking through a world on the brink of war, and having an analog television dream channel experience, they would be given an antidote, informed by how long they were under the influence of the first potion. It was then revealed that the experience was actually and experiment by the Aether Research Institute, and participants were invited to share their thoughts through a survey.
